What to Expect at Your First Fertility Appointment as an LGBTQ+ Couple

Posted on June 25, 2026 by Inception Fertility

Taking the first step toward parenthood is exciting but might also feel a little nerve-wracking. That's completely normal. At IVFMD, we see many LGBTQ+ individuals and couples who arrive at their first consultation with a mix of hope and uncertainty. Our goal is to make that first visit feel as welcoming and informative as possible.

Here's a behind-the-scenes look at what you can expect when you walk through our doors.

Before You Arrive: What to Bring

Coming prepared helps make your consultation as productive as possible. We recommend bringing:

  • A valid photo ID and insurance information (if applicable)

  • Any prior fertility testing results or relevant medical history

  • A list of any current medications or supplements

  • Any questions you'd like to discuss — there are no silly questions here

  • Your partner, if you'd like them present

What Happens During the Consultation?

Your first visit is primarily a conversation. One of our board-certified fertility specialists will take the time to understand your unique situation, your goals, and any medical history that may be relevant. This is not a one-size-fits-all intake process — we tailor our approach to you.

Depending on your specific circumstances, your provider may also:

  • Order baseline fertility testing, such as bloodwork or an ultrasound, to assess ovarian reserve or other factors

  • Review options for donor sperm or donor eggs if relevant to your path

  • Discuss reciprocal IVF and what that process would look like for your partnership

  • Explain surrogacy coordination if you are a same-sex male couple

  • Talk through fertility preservation options for transgender or non-binary patients

Will I Feel Comfortable There?

We hope so — and we work hard to make sure of it. IVFMD has earned the Fertility Equity Achievement Badge, which reflects our ongoing commitment to inclusive, affirming care for all patients regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Our staff receives training in LGBTQ+ inclusive language and practices, and our intake forms are designed to be inclusive of all family structures.

You should never feel the need to explain or justify who you are to receive excellent care. Our team's job is simply to help you build the family you're envisioning.

What Questions Should I Ask?

Every patient's questions will be different, but here are some helpful ones to consider:

  • What fertility pathway do you recommend for our specific situation, and why?

  • What does the success rate look like for that pathway?

  • How long might this process take from start to finish?

  • What does the financial picture look like, and what are our payment or financing options?

  • Do you work with sperm banks and donor agencies, and can you help us navigate that process?

What Comes After the Consultation?

After your visit, your care team will put together a personalized treatment plan and walk you through the recommended next steps. If testing was ordered, results typically come back within a few days, and your provider will review them with you.

You are never rushed at IVFMD. We understand that fertility decisions are significant, and we're here to support you through every part of the process — medically, emotionally, and logistically.
